A full week in the Kansai region - the right pace for Kyoto, plus two contrasting day trips: Nara for ancient calm and Osaka for its vibrant energy and neighbourhood culture. Best for: first-time Japan visitors with a week, or returnees exploring deeper.

Days 1-5 follow the Kyoto 5-Day Itinerary. Days 6 and 7 add Osaka and a final Kyoto morning.

Day 0 - Arrive in Kyoto

Land, Transfer, Settle

Airport: KIX. Haruka Express to Kyoto Station (75 min, ¥3,600 or ¥2,850 with IC discount).
Hotel: Near Kawaramachi, Gion, or Kyoto Station. A central base works for the whole week.
Evening: Kamo River walk and explore the Kawaramachi area.

Days 1-5 - Full Kyoto + Nara

Days 1-5

Core Kyoto Circuit - Follow the 5-Day Plan

Day 1: Fushimi Inari → Teramachi Street (covered shopping/culture arcade) → Kinkaku-ji → Ryoan-ji → Arashiyama.
Day 2: Philosopher's Path → Nanzen-ji → Gion evening → Pontocho evening stroll.
Day 3: Kiyomizu-dera → Higashiyama lanes → Yasaka Shrine → Fushimi Inari area.
Day 4: Nijo Castle → Daitoku-ji temple complex → Kita-ku neighbourhood.
Day 5: Nara day trip (Kintetsu, 45 min, ¥760) - Deer Park → Todai-ji → Kasuga Taisha.

Day 6 - Osaka Day Trip

Travel to Osaka

By Shinkansen: Kyoto to Shin-Osaka, 15 min on the Nozomi or Hikari (¥1,420). Fast but slightly overkill for a day trip.
By regular train: JR Kyoto Line rapid from Kyoto Station to Osaka Station - 30 min, ¥560. The practical and economical choice. IC card works.
Osaka vs Nara: Osaka = vibrant urban energy and nightlife. Nara = calm, nature, and ancient temples. For Day 6, Osaka is the stronger choice after the quiet of Nara on Day 5.

Late Morning · 10:00

Dotonbori

What: Osaka's most famous canal-side entertainment district - giant neon signs, the iconic Glico running man billboard, and a lively street atmosphere that defines Osaka's character.
Time: 1.5 hrs walking the canal and taking in the spectacle.

🚇 10 min - Namba → Tanimachi 4-chome by subway (Midosuji and Tanimachi lines, ¥230)

Afternoon · 13:00

Osaka Castle

What: Originally built in 1583 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi - the most powerful warlord of the Sengoku period. Rebuilt in 1931 with a modern interior museum. The surrounding park (Osaka-jo Koen) is one of Japan's best castle grounds.
Cost: ¥600 for the castle museum. Park grounds free.
Time: 1-1.5 hrs including the tower and grounds.

🚇 20 min - Osaka Castle Park → Kuromon Market (subway or walk to Namba area)

Kuromon Ichiba Market + Namba Evening

Kuromon Market: Osaka's famous covered market - "Kuromon Ichiba". A lively, atmospheric covered arcade with a distinctive local character.
Evening: Stay in Namba/Dotonbori for the night atmosphere - the canal lights up after dark and the entertainment district is at its most vibrant.
Return: Last train from Osaka back to Kyoto - JR Kyoto Line runs until midnight.

Day 7 - Final Kyoto Morning + Farewell

Teramachi Street Morning

Plan: A final stroll through Teramachi Street for last-minute gifts, crafts, and Kyoto souvenirs.
Time: 45-60 min. Buy any gifts here rather than at Kyoto Station (better quality, same or lower price).

Kyoto Imperial Palace (Kyoto Gosho)

What: The former residence of Japan's Imperial Family from 794 until the capital moved to Tokyo in 1869. The palace grounds are open free to the public - walk the extensive garden, stone paths, and palace buildings with English audio guide.
Cost: Free (since 2016 - previously required advance booking). Opens 9am.
Time: 1-1.5 hrs for the full circuit.

Kamogawa River Walk + Farewell Dinner

Kamogawa: Walk the wide Kamo River promenade from Imadegawa south to Sanjo - locals sit by the riverbank, herons stand motionless in the water. A peaceful end to a week in Kyoto.
Departure: Kyoto Station is fully shinkansen-accessible. Haruka Express to KIX takes 75 min from Kyoto Station - allow 3 hours before your flight.

Before You Go

Kansai transport pass. For a 7-day Kansai trip, consider the 7-day Kansai Wide Area Pass (¥10,000) - covers JR trains across the Kansai region including the Haruka Express from/to KIX and the Shinkansen between Kyoto and Osaka. Calculate against your planned journeys.

Kyoto bus day pass. ¥700 for unlimited Kyoto City Bus rides. Useful on Day 1 (multiple bus legs). Less essential on Days 2-3 if you're cycling or walking Higashiyama.

Osaka energy. Osaka has a famously outgoing, friendly culture compared to quieter Kyoto. Locals are approachable and the pace of the city is noticeably faster - a useful contrast after a week of temple calm.
