Gion District: Quick Attraction Briefing

Gion is Kyoto's most famous neighbourhood - the best-preserved geisha district in Japan, active since the 15th century and still home to approximately 200 geiko (the Kyoto term for geisha) and maiko (apprentices) today. Walking Hanamikoji-dori in the early evening, past ochaya teahouses and stone lanterns, is one of the most atmospheric experiences Japan offers.

Gion District, Kyoto
Twilight in Gion: Hanamikoji-dori's ochaya teahouses and lantern-lit lanes evoke the timeless atmosphere of Kyoto's geisha district, where tradition lives on in every step.

Quick Briefing

  • Area: Gion, central-eastern Kyoto (between Shijo and Sanjo, east of the Kamo River)
  • Time needed: 1-2 hr evening walk
  • Best time slot: 5-7pm on weekdays for the best chance of seeing geiko or maiko
  • Must do: Walk Hanamikoji-dori from Shijo to Gion corner; end at Yasaka Shrine (lit up at night)
  • Cost: Free to walk. No entry fee.
  • Access: Gion-Shijo Station (Keihan Line), 2 min walk to Hanamikoji-dori.

By the Numbers

  • History: Active geisha district since the 15th century - one of the oldest surviving entertainment districts in the world.
  • Geiko and maiko today: Approximately 200 geiko and maiko remain active across Kyoto's five hanamachi (flower town) districts. Gion Kobu (the main Gion district) is the largest and most prestigious.
  • Hanamikoji-dori: The main preserved street - wooden ochaya teahouses with latticed windows and stone lanterns. The ochaya only accept guests by personal introduction; the street itself is always open.
  • Photography etiquette: Do not chase, photograph without permission, or obstruct geiko and maiko on the street. This is their professional neighbourhood and workplace. Persistent tourists have led Gion to place photography restrictions in several alleyways.
  • Gion Matsuri: July festival held in the neighbourhood - one of Japan's three great festivals, 1,100+ years of continuous tradition. The Yamaboko Junko float parade (July 17 and 24) is the most spectacular event in Kyoto's calendar.
  • Shirakawa area: The northern Gion area around the Shirakawa canal is even quieter than Hanamikoji - willow trees, stone bridges, and machiya - and less visited.

What's Nearby

  • Pontocho alley - 5 min west, across the Kamo River. Kyoto's other famous narrow dining alley, parallel to Gion. Dozens of restaurants with river terrace views. Great for dinner after a Gion walk.
  • Kamo River (Kamogawa) - 5 min west. The wide riverside promenade between Shijo and Sanjo is where locals come to sit in the evenings. Beautiful at sunset.
  • Kiyomizu-dera - 20 min walk east uphill through Higashiyama. Worth the walk for the hilltop views and stone-paved Sannen-zaka lanes on the way back down.

Gion is the evening highlight of Day 2 in the Kyoto 2-Day Itinerary. For couples, the Kyoto Couples Itinerary includes a kimono rental walk through Gion before dinner in Pontocho.
