🚶 5 min walk - Gion → Pontocho alley entrance at Kamo River
    Evening · 19:00

    Before You Go

IC card on buses. Kyoto City Bus flat fare is ¥230 per ride - tap in and tap out with ICOCA or Suica. Bus day pass (¥700) is worth it if you take 4+ trips in a day.
Kinkaku-ji crowds. The pavilion circuit fills quickly by 10am. Go at opening (9am) or late afternoon for fewer people. Fushimi Inari is best before 7am for empty torii shots.
Bicycle hire. Strongly recommended for Kyoto - most flat areas are very cycleable. ¥1,000-1,500/day from shops near Kyoto Station or Kawaramachi. Faster than buses on many routes.
Kimono rental. Rent a kimono in Higashiyama for the Gion evening walk - ¥3,000-5,000 for a 2-3hr rental including dressing. Returns usually required by 6pm. Genuinely transforms the Gion experience.
Cherry blossom season. Late March to mid-April. Philosopher's Path is extraordinary - but book accommodation 3-6 months ahead and expect surging prices. Worth every bit of planning.
