Kyoto 5-Day Itinerary: Deep Temples, Hidden Neighborhoods & Nara Day Trip
Five days lets you move at a slower pace - covering the headline sights without rushing, adding off-the-beaten-path temple districts, and fitting in Japan's other great ancient capital, Nara, as a comfortable day trip. Best for: dedicated cultural travellers and Japan returnees.
Days 1-3 follow the Kyoto 3-Day Itinerary. Days 4 and 5 go deeper.

Arrival
Land, Transfer, Settle

- Evening: Kamo River walk and explore the lively Kawaramachi district.
Days 1-3 - Core Kyoto Circuit
Days 1-3
Core Kyoto - Follow the 3-Day Plan
- Day 1: Fushimi Inari early → Teramachi Street (covered shopping/culture arcade) → Kinkaku-ji → Ryoan-ji → Arashiyama bamboo + Tenryu-ji.
- Day 2: Philosopher's Path → Nanzen-ji → Gion evening → Pontocho alley walk.
- Day 3: Kiyomizu-dera early → Higashiyama lanes (Sannen-zaka, Ninen-zaka) → Yasaka Shrine → Fushimi historic district.
- See the Kyoto 3-Day Itinerary for full stop-by-stop details.
Day 4 - Nijo Castle · Daitoku-ji · Kita-ku
Morning · 9:00
Nijo Castle
- What: The lavish palace built in 1603 by Tokugawa Ieyasu as his Kyoto residence - a symbol of shogun authority displayed to the Emperor. Famous for its "nightingale floors" (uguisubari) designed to squeak at every step to alert guards to intruders.
- Do: Walk through the Ninomaru Palace interior (rooms with spectacular gilded screen paintings), the Ninomaru Garden, and the outer moat circuit.
- Time: 1.5-2 hrs.
- Cost: ¥1,300 adults. Opens 8:45am.
- Access: Nijo-jo-mae bus stop (¥230) or Nijo-jo Station on the Tozai subway line.
🚌 Bus 12 from Nijo Castle to Daitokuji-mae (20 min, ¥230)
Afternoon · 12:00
Daitoku-ji Temple Complex
- What: Kyoto's most rewarding off-the-beaten-path temple district - a walled complex of 22 sub-temples in northern Kyoto, each with its own dry garden. Minimal crowds even in peak season.
- Best sub-temples: Daisen-in (famous painted screens, beautiful dry rock garden, ¥400) and Zuiho-in (Zen garden created in 1961 with a subtle Christian cross embedded in the moss garden, ¥400). Each requires 30 min.
- Atmosphere: Feels genuinely apart from tourist Kyoto. Monks' quarters, moss-covered stone walls, hidden garden corridors. One of the most serene places in the city.
- Time: 2-3 hrs for the complex and two sub-temples.
🚶 20 min walk south or 🚌 bus from Daitokuji-mae back toward Kawaramachi
Evening · 16:00
Kita-ku Neighbourhood Walk
- What: The area around Daitoku-ji is a quiet, upscale residential neighbourhood - a rare glimpse of Kyoto that most visitors never see. Traditional machiya side streets, small tofu restaurants, local sake shops.
- Dinner: Return to Kawaramachi or try a kaiseki restaurant near Nijo Castle (book ahead, ¥6,000-12,000 per person).
Day 5 - Nara Day Trip
Morning · 8:30
Travel to Nara
- Getting there: Kintetsu Limited Express from Kintetsu-Kyoto Station (Kyoto Station basement) to Kintetsu-Nara Station. 45 min, ¥760 one way - the fastest and most convenient option.
- Alternatively: JR Miyakoji Rapid from JR Kyoto Station to JR Nara Station. 45 min, ¥720.
- Plan: Aim to reach Nara Deer Park by 9:30am - the early morning in Nara is peaceful and the deer are most active before the midday crowds.
Late Morning · 9:30
Nara Deer Park
- What: Over 1,200 wild sika deer roam freely through the park - considered sacred messengers of the gods in Nara's Shinto tradition. They bow when given shika senbei deer crackers (¥200 from vendors at park gates).
- Do: Walk north through the park toward Todai-ji. The deer approach you - be firm if they get pushy (they will headbutt for crackers).
- Time: 30-45 min wandering to reach Todai-ji.
🚶 10 min walk north through the park
Afternoon · 10:30
Todai-ji Great Buddha
- What: The Daibutsu-den hall houses Japan's largest bronze Buddha - 14.7m tall, cast in 752 AD. The wooden hall itself is the world's largest wooden building. Both are staggering in scale.
- Do: Enter the main hall, walk around the Buddha, and try the pillar with a hole (said to be the same size as Buddha's nostril - passing through brings enlightenment).
- Cost: ¥600 adults.
- Time: 45-60 min.
🚶 20 min walk east through the park - follow signs to Kasuga Taisha
Afternoon · 13:00
Kasuga Taisha Shrine
- What: Nara's most important Shinto shrine, founded in 768 AD - famous for 3,000 stone and bronze lanterns lining the approach paths. UNESCO World Heritage. The surrounding primeval forest is a designated natural monument.
- Cost: Grounds free; inner sanctuary ¥500.
- Time: 45 min.
🚶 30 min walk back to Kintetsu-Nara Station through the shopping arcade (Higashimuki)
Evening · 16:00
Return to Kyoto
- Plan: Back to Kyoto by 5pm. Final Kyoto evening - Pontocho alley dinner or farewell sake at Fushimi.
- Nara tip: The early morning is the best time in Nara - the deer park at 9am before coach tours arrive is genuinely peaceful.
Before You Go
Daitoku-ji sub-temples. Most sub-temples charge ¥400-500 individually. Entry is not covered by any pass. Hours vary - check before visiting; some open only at specific seasons.
Nara deer crackers. Buy from vendors at the park entrance (¥200 per bundle). The deer are friendly but insistent - hold crackers flat (not above your head), feed quickly, and don't show the package or they'll mob you.
Kintetsu to Nara. Slightly cheaper and marginally faster than JR. Kintetsu-Nara Station drops you directly into Nara's shopping arcade - 10 min walk to the deer park. No seat reservation needed on the Limited Express (¥760 total).
Daitoku-ji pacing. Don't rush the Daitoku-ji complex. The sub-temples each take 20-30 minutes to appreciate properly. The stone walls, moss gardens, and raked gravel reward a slow pace - this is the meditative Kyoto most visitors miss.
