Kiyomizu-dera: Quick Attraction Briefing

Kiyomizu-dera is the most dramatic temple in Kyoto - a 778 AD hillside complex with a wooden stage jutting 13 metres out from the cliff face, 12 metres above the ground, supported by 139 massive wooden pillars locked together with no nails. From the stage, Kyoto spreads below you in every direction. One of Japan's National Treasures.

Kiyomizu-dera Temple, Kyoto
The iconic wooden stage of Kiyomizu-dera, Kyoto, juts out over the hillside, offering sweeping views of the city and cherry blossoms in spring or fiery maples in autumn.

By the Numbers

  • Founded: 778 AD by the monk Enchin - the current structures date to 1633, rebuilt under orders of shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu.
  • Wooden stage: Extends 13m out from the main hall, 12m above the valley. Supported by 139 zelkova wooden pillars, assembled without a single nail using a traditional Japanese joinery technique.
  • National Treasure: Both the main hall and the stage are listed as National Treasures of Japan. The entire complex is UNESCO World Heritage.
  • Otowa waterfall: Three separate streams at the base of the cliff, each associated with a different blessing - longevity, success in love, and academic achievement. Visitors drink from one using a long-handled ladle. Local advice: drinking from all three is considered greedy.
  • The expression: "Jumping off the stage at Kiyomizudera" (kiyomizu no butai kara tobioriru) is a Japanese idiom meaning to make a bold, irreversible decision - originating from a historical belief that jumping from the stage and surviving would grant your wish.
  • Night illuminations: Kiyomizu-dera holds special night viewing events during spring cherry blossom season and autumn foliage season. The illuminated wooden stage and city lights below create a spectacular scene (¥400 for night entry).
