Day 0 - Arrive in Tokyo

Arrival

Land, Check In, Orient

  • Base: Shinjuku is the ideal home base for young adults - 24-hour energy, arcades, and excellent transport links in every direction.
  • Hotel tip: Budget capsule hotels in Kabukicho (¥3,000-4,500/night) or mid-range hotels near Shinjuku-Sanchome station.
  • Tonight: Walk Shinjuku's neon-lit streets and take in the energy of Kabukicho. This is Tokyo - it never sleeps.
  • Transit: Narita Express (N'EX) from Narita to Shinjuku (90 min, ¥3,070) or Keikyu Airport Express from Haneda (35 min, ¥660).

Day 1 - Asakusa, Go-Karting, Akihabara & teamLab

Early Morning · 6:00

Senso-ji Temple at Dawn

  • Why early: Between 6-8 AM, Senso-ji belongs to you and a handful of pilgrims. No tourist crowds, golden light through the lanterns, incense smoke drifting across empty courtyards. Genuinely one of Tokyo's most beautiful moments.
  • Nakamise: The covered shopping street is shuttered at this hour - walk it for the architecture.
  • Duration: 45 min.
🚶 5 min walk - Senso-ji → go-kart meeting point near Kaminarimon (operators vary, confirm location on booking)
Late Morning · 9:00

Street Go-Karting - Asakusa Area

  • What it is: Licensed operators run street-legal go-karts through Tokyo's actual roads in themed costumes - Mario, anime characters, samurai helmets. The Asakusa and Odaiba routes pass through Kaminarimon and along the waterfront. Wildly photogenic.
  • Duration: 30-60 min driving, plus 30 min briefing and costume selection.
  • Cost: ¥8,000-14,000 depending on route and operator. Book at least 2-3 days ahead.
  • Requirements: An International Driving Permit (IDP) issued in your home country, or a valid Japanese driver's licence. Get the IDP before you leave home - it's essential and non-negotiable.
  • Operators: Search "Tokyo street go-kart" - well-known licensed operators include MariCAR alternatives post-legal disputes. Read recent reviews for current operators.
🚇 15 min - Asakusa → Akihabara via Tsukuba Express (¥200)
Afternoon · 13:00

Akihabara - Arcades, Electronics & Anime

  • Super Potato: Retro game shop on Chuo-dori - floors 3-5 are stacked floor to ceiling with Famicom, Super Nintendo, and vintage arcade boards. A pilgrimage for any gamer.
  • Club Sega / GiGO arcades: Multiple floors of UFO catcher machines, rhythm games (Taiko no Tatsujin, maimai, CHUNITHM), and fighting game stations. ¥100-200 per game.
  • Yodobashi Akiba: 9-floor electronics megastore - cameras, headphones, components, and a vast anime goods section on the upper floors.
  • Duration: Allow 2 hrs minimum. Go upstairs - the best stuff is never on the ground floor.
🚇 30 min - Akihabara → Toyosu via Tsukuba Express + Yurakucho Line (¥280)
Evening · 17:00

teamLab Planets Toyosu

  • Book an evening slot: The water room and infinity galleries take on an entirely different atmosphere after dark - more atmospheric, perfect for photos.
  • Tickets: ¥3,200. Book online in advance, slots sell out. Allow 60-90 min.

Day 2 - Harajuku, Shibuya Sky & Nightlife

Morning · 11:00

Harajuku & Omotesando

  • Takeshita Street: Even if you've seen it online, it's more intense in person - vintage fashion, character goods, and an absurd density of visual stimulation in 400 metres.
  • Omotesando: Transition from chaotic to curated - this wide, tree-lined boulevard is Tokyo's answer to the Champs-Élysées. Dover Street Market, Supreme, Comme des Garçons, and dozens of smaller boutiques.
🚇 5 min - Harajuku → Shibuya via JR Yamanote Line (¥140)
Afternoon · 15:00

Shibuya Scramble & Shibuya Sky at Sunset

  • Shibuya Scramble: Walk it, photograph it, stand in the middle during a green light cycle - one of those experiences that doesn't disappoint even when you expect it.
  • Shibuya Sky: Rooftop observation deck atop Shibuya Scramble Square (45F). ¥2,000 timed entry - book online at the exact time you want (sunset slots sell out first). The open-air terrace with 360° city views and no glass is extraordinary.
Night · 20:00 onwards

Shibuya & Shinjuku Evening

  • Shibuya evening: Walk Nonbei Yokocho ("Memory Lane"), explore the Udagawacho backstreets and Shibuya's multi-floor entertainment venues after dark.
  • Shinjuku Kabukicho: Karaoke at Big Echo (multiple floors, private rooms from ¥350/30 min) or Karaoke-kan (one of the originals, very atmospheric). Last trains from Shinjuku depart ~12:30 AM.
  • Last train: Tokyo trains stop around 12:30 AM on most lines. After that it's a ¥2,000-4,000 taxi or plan ahead to head back before the last service.

Before You Go

International Driving Permit. Required for street go-karting. Get one from your national automobile association before you leave home - usually same-day, ¥2,500 equivalent. Japanese-issued licences also work.
Akihabara floors. The best retro games, doujinshi, and model kits are always on upper floors - ground floors are tourist-facing. Super Potato floors 3-5, Mandarake Complex, and Kotobukiya are the real destinations.
Last train timing. Most Tokyo lines stop between 12:00-12:30 AM. Check your line's last train time on Google Maps before heading out. Taxis after midnight are expensive - ¥2,000-5,000 back to Shinjuku from Shibuya.
Shinjuku Golden Gai. Six tiny alleyways, 200+ bars each seating 6-8 people. Cover charges ¥500-800 plus ¥600-900 drinks. No attitude - just squeeze in, order a drink, and talk to whoever's there. One of the world's great bar experiences.
Shinjuku safety. Kabukicho is safe to walk at night but touts outside clubs can be persistent. A polite but firm "no thank you" works. Never hand over your passport as security at any club.
