Tokyo 3-Day Itinerary for Young Adults

Three days lets you go deeper - add Odaiba's SEGA Joypolis, the life-sized Gundam, and a final night in Shinjuku's vibrant Kabukicho entertainment district to the already electric 2-day core.

Day 0 - Arrive in Tokyo

Arrival

Land, Check In, Settle

Base: Shinjuku - 24-hour energy, central to all three days.
Hotel tip: Capsule hotels in Kabukicho (¥3,000-4,500) or mid-range near Shinjuku-Sanchome. Book 2+ weeks ahead for peak months.
Tonight: Walk Shinjuku's neon-lit streets and take in the energy of Kabukicho.

Day 1 - Asakusa Dawn, Go-Karting & Akihabara

Senso-ji at Dawn

Why early: 6-8 AM, the temple is empty and golden. Pilgrims light incense, cats sit on steps. This is the real Tokyo, before the crowds arrive.
Duration: 45 min.

🚶 5 min walk - Senso-ji → go-kart operator near Kaminarimon

Late Morning · 9:00

Street Go-Karting

What it is: Street-legal go-karts through Tokyo in Mario/anime costumes. Routes through Asakusa and waterfront areas. Wildly photogenic.
Cost: ¥8,000-14,000. Book 2-3 days ahead. International Driving Permit required.
Duration: 30-60 min driving. Allow 2 hrs total with costume and briefing.

Afternoon · 13:00

Akihabara Arcades & Anime

Stops: Super Potato (retro games), GiGO arcade (rhythm games, UFO catchers), Yodobashi Akiba (9 floors electronics + anime), Mandarake Complex (used manga, figures, rare goods).
Duration: 2-3 hrs. Upper floors have the best finds.
Evening: teamLab Planets Toyosu evening slot (¥3,200, book ahead), then explore the Akihabara area.

Day 2 - Harajuku, Shibuya Sky & Nightlife

Morning · 11:00

Harajuku & Shibuya

Harajuku Takeshita Street: Vintage fashion shops, character goods. 30-45 min.
Omotesando: Flagship stores (Supreme, Comme des Garçons, A Bathing Ape). Window shopping and browsing.
Shibuya Scramble: Walk the crossing at peak hour - 500 people crossing simultaneously. Stand in the middle of the intersection for the full effect.
Shibuya Sky sunset: ¥2,000 timed entry, book online. Open-air rooftop with no glass barriers, 360° Tokyo views. Book the sunset slot - it sells out first.

Night · 20:00

Shibuya & Shinjuku Nightlife

Shibuya nightlife: Nonbei Yokocho alley, Udagawacho basement clubs, or karaoke in Shibuya.
Shinjuku karaoke: Big Echo or Karaoke-kan in Kabukicho - private rooms from ¥350/30 min. Last trains ~12:30 AM.

Day 3 - Odaiba Joypolis, Gundam & Shinjuku Kabukicho

Morning · 10:00

Tokyo Joypolis, Odaiba

What it is: SEGA's flagship indoor amusement park - VR rides, motion simulators, the spectacular Initial D arcade experience, and a massive gaming floor. Allow 2-3 hrs.
Tickets: ¥800 entry + per-ride (most ¥500-700), or ¥4,300 unlimited passport. The passport is worth it if you're staying 3+ hrs.
Access: Yurikamome Line from Shimbashi to Odaiba-Kaihinkoen station (25 min, ¥330) - the driverless elevated train itself is cool.

Afternoon · 13:30

DiverCity - Life-Sized Gundam

Gundam: The 18-metre ν Gundam outside DiverCity is free to view - one of Tokyo's most impressive spectacles for anyone who grew up with the franchise.
Inside: Gundam Base retail shop (models from ¥500 to ¥50,000).
teamLab Borderless option: If you missed teamLab, the Azabudai Hills location (larger than Planets) is an alternative - ¥3,800, book ahead.

Night · 19:00

Shinjuku Kabukicho - Final Night

What it is: Tokyo's most energetic entertainment district - pachinko parlours, multi-floor karaoke venues, arcades, and neon-saturated streets. The atmosphere after dark is electric.
How to do it: Head to Robot Restaurant street (Kabukicho 1-chome), explore the Godzilla-topped Toho Cinema building, or duck into any of the multi-floor karaoke complexes (Big Echo, Karaoke-kan) for a private room from ¥350/30 min.

Before You Go

Joypolis one-day pass. If you plan to spend 3+ hours at Joypolis, the ¥4,300 unlimited passport beats buying individual ride tokens. The Initial D and VR attractions alone justify it.

Kabukicho karaoke. Big Echo and Karaoke-kan both have private rooms where you control the song list, volume, and lights. Book online to skip queues on weekends - groups of 2-4 are easiest to accommodate.

Go-kart requirements. International Driving Permit is essential - get it from your national auto club before you leave. Takes 15 min to issue and costs ¥2,500 equivalent.

Last train. Tokyo trains stop ~12:30 AM. Set an alarm for 12:00 if you're in Shibuya or Shinjuku to catch the last Yamanote Line train. Taxis after midnight from Shibuya to Shinjuku cost ¥1,500-2,000.
