Tokyo 5-Day Itinerary for Young Adults
Five days in Tokyo for young adults - each day has its own identity, from Asakusa dawn temples and street go-karting to maid cafés, Shibuya rooftops, and a Shimokitazawa vinyl-and-live-music evening that feels nothing like the tourist trail.
See also the Tokyo 5-Day base itinerary for timing and transit details.

- What it is: Staff dressed as maids serve you in character - games, songs, latte art drawn to order, and (sometimes) group chants. Absurd and uniquely Tokyo.
- Cost: ¥700 cover charge + ¥800-1,200 per drink/food item. Most cafés allow 1-2 hr visits. @Home Café and Maidreamin are popular entry points.
- Etiquette: Don't try to have a meta conversation with staff about the performance - stay in the game. No photography of staff without permission. Tips are appreciated but not expected.
- Evening: GiGO/Club Sega arcades for rhythm games (CHUNITHM, maimai, Taiko) until closing.

Day 5 - Shimokitazawa & Shinjuku Golden Gai
Afternoon · 13:00
Shimokitazawa
- What it is: Tokyo's indie neighbourhood - vintage record shops, second-hand fashion, live music venues, and independent bars in narrow underground lanes. Everything the tourist trail avoids.
- Access: Odakyu Line from Shinjuku to Shimokitazawa (10 min, ¥160).
- Must visit: Flash Disc Ranch (vinyl), Village Vanguard (eccentric goods + music), Shirube (standing bar, ¥700/glass). Allow 3 hrs to wander and discover.
🚇 10 min - Shimokitazawa → Shinjuku via Odakyu Line (¥160)
Night · 20:00
Shinjuku Golden Gai - Final Night
- 200+ bars, 6 alleys: Each bar seats 6-12 people and has a theme. Cover charge ¥500-800, drinks ¥600-900. Bar-hop 3-4 over the night.
- Discovery: Let the bar's aesthetic choose you - look through the window, if it feels right, go in. That's the whole method.
Before You Go
Don Quijote souvenir haul. Pick up unique Japanese goods at Don Quijote (Donki) in Akihabara - novelty items, regional snack packaging to bring home as gifts, and exclusive Japanese products. ¥2,000-3,000 for a haul.
Go-kart IDP. Get your International Driving Permit before you leave - it's a 15-minute process at your national automobile club. Without it, no operator will let you drive.
Maid café etiquette. Stay in the performance - call the maids by their character names, participate in the games, and keep it light. It's theatre. Don't try to get personal numbers or contact information.
Shimokitazawa live music. Check what's on at Shelter, Garage, or Basementbar (¥1,500-3,000 door) - the neighbourhood has a thriving indie rock and jazz scene most nights.
All-night option. If you miss the last train, Manga Kissa (24-hr manga café) charges ¥1,500-2,500 for a night cubicle with free-flow drinks and fast WiFi. Better than a ¥4,000 taxi.
