Day 0 - Arrive in Tokyo

Land, Check In, First Evening

Plan: Fly into Haneda (HND) for the shorter, easier transfer. 30 min to central Tokyo - ideal after a long flight together.
Hotel tip: Asakusa for a romantic atmosphere - traditional riverside neighbourhood, Senso-ji lanterns glow at night, and the area is far quieter than Shinjuku after dark. Alternatively, a mid-range hotel in Ginza for easy access to galleries.
Tonight: Drop luggage, walk the empty Nakamise street at night - Senso-ji with no crowds is a private preview of tomorrow's dawn visit. Enjoy a peaceful evening stroll.

Day 1 - Senso-ji Dawn, Skytree Sunset & Riverside Evening

Early Morning · 6:30

Senso-ji at Dawn

Why go this early: At 6:30 AM it's just you, a handful of pilgrims, incense smoke drifting through the lantern-lit gate, and complete silence. This is one of Tokyo's genuinely romantic experiences - the temple belongs to you for an hour.
Walk: Through the Kaminarimon gate, down the shuttered Nakamise, into the main hall. Light incense together (¥100), draw omikuji fortunes (¥100), and enjoy the quiet atmosphere.
Duration: 45-60 min. The crowd arrives at 8 AM - be gone by then.

🚶 10 min walk - Senso-ji → Sumida River promenade

Sumida River Walk

Why visit: The riverside walk between Asakusa and Hamarikyu is a peaceful, flat promenade with views of Tokyo Skytree, traditional houseboats, and the occasional passing ferry. Allow 30-45 min of wandering.

🚇 10 min - Asakusa → Tokyo Skytree (Tobu Skytree Line, ¥160, or 15 min walk)

Afternoon · 15:00

Tokyo Skytree - 1 Hour Before Sunset

Book timed entry: Tembo Deck (350 m, ¥2,100) or Tembo Galleria (450 m, ¥1,000 extra). Book the 1-hour-before-sunset slot online - the transition from golden hour to city lights is the best window of the day.
Romantic moment: The circular Tembo Galleria is the highest you can go - the glass tube spiral walkway at sunset, with Tokyo spreading endlessly below, is unforgettable.
Duration: 1.5 hrs at the tower including queue time.

🚶 5 min walk - Skytree → Asakusa riverside, Sumida River

Riverside Evening Walk

Asakusa riverside area: Enjoy the riverside promenade and views of the Sumida River. Relax and take in the evening atmosphere.

Day 2 - Yanaka, Hamarikyu & Daikanyama

Morning · 10:00

Yanaka Old Neighbourhood

Why it's special: Yanaka survived WWII bombing - it's the closest you'll get to old Edo Tokyo. Narrow winding lanes, traditional shotengai shopping streets, a working cemetery with cats, artisan craft shops, and independent studios. This neighbourhood feels like a different city.
Access: JR Nippori station (Yamanote Line) is the gateway. Walk west into the cemetery, then wind through the lanes to Yanaka Ginza shopping street.
Stops: Yanaka Ginza shotengai (covered old shopping street with local crafts and goods), Scai the Bathhouse gallery (contemporary art in a 200-year-old bathhouse, free). Allow 1.5 hrs of wandering.

🚇 25 min - Nippori → Shimbashi, then walk to Hamarikyu Garden (Yamanote + walk, ¥170)

Afternoon · 13:30

Hamarikyu Garden

Why it's romantic: A formal tidal garden surrounded by modern skyscrapers - an extraordinary contrast. Flat paths around quiet ponds, a 300-year-old plum grove, and ducks on the water. ¥300 adults.
Duration: 1.5 hrs in the garden.

🚇 20 min - Shimbashi → Daikanyama via Tokyu Toyoko Line (¥190)

Evening · 17:30

Omotesando & Daikanyama Evening Walk

Omotesando: Final window shopping - the tree-lined boulevard at dusk is beautiful. The OMOTESANDO HILLS building (Ando architecture) is worth a visit for its design and shops.
Daikanyama: Tokyo's most upscale, tree-lined residential neighbourhood - boutique hotels and Tsutaya Books (architecturally stunning bookshop). Enjoy an evening stroll through the neighbourhood.

Before You Go

Pre-book Skytree and Shibuya Sky. Both observation decks sell out timed entry slots - especially at sunset. Book 3-7 days ahead via the official websites. The right time slot makes an enormous difference to the experience.

Best couple photo spots. Senso-ji at 6:30 AM (empty, golden lanterns), Sumida River bridges (Skytree reflection), Hamarikyu teahouse deck (over the water), and Daikanyama Tsutaya exterior at night.

Yanaka cats. The neighbourhood is famous for its resident cats who roam the old cemetery and shotengai. Feeding them is technically discouraged but locals do it anyway. Half the joy of Yanaka is seeing who turns the corner first - you or a cat.
