Five days of romantic Tokyo - each day finds a different facet of the city, from ancient forested shrines and hidden old neighbourhoods to bay sunsets, Ginza galleries, and the intimacy of quiet neighbourhood exploration.

Day 0 - Arrive in Tokyo

Arrival

Land, Check In, First Evening

Plan: Fly into Haneda (HND) - 30 min to Asakusa or Ginza. The short transfer starts the trip right.
Hotel tip: Asakusa for atmosphere, Ginza for gallery access. Both are ideal for couples.
Tonight: Evening walk through Nakamise to Senso-ji at night (the lanterns are beautiful and it's quiet).

Day 1 - Asakusa Dawn & Skytree Sunset

Senso-ji at Dawn

Go early: 6:30 AM - the temple belongs to you and the pilgrims. Incense, golden light, silence. Omikuji fortunes together (¥100). 45 min.
After: Sumida River walk, watching the Skytree in the morning water.

Afternoon · 15:30

Tokyo Skytree Sunset

Book timed entry: Tembo Deck ¥2,100 + Tembo Galleria ¥1,000 extra. The 1-hour-before-sunset slot. Book 3-5 days ahead.
Romantic experience: The spiral glass walkway at the top during golden hour, then city lights emerging below as darkness falls.

Riverside Evening Walk

Asakusa: Stroll the riverside promenade with Sumida River views. Enjoy the evening atmosphere.

Day 2 - Yanaka & Hamarikyu

Morning · 10:00

Yanaka Old Neighbourhood

Pre-war Tokyo, intact: Narrow lanes, artisan craft shops, and resident cats. 1.5 hrs of wandering. JR Nippori station.
Scai the Bathhouse: Contemporary art gallery inside a 200-year-old bathhouse - free, extraordinary space.

🚇 25 min - Nippori → Shimbashi then walk to Hamarikyu (¥170)

Afternoon · 13:30

Hamarikyu Garden

Garden: Tidal formal garden, ¥300 adults. Flat paths, historic ponds.

Evening · 19:00

Daikanyama Evening Walk & Dinner

Daikanyama: Tsutaya Books architecture, and beautiful tree-lined streets. Enjoy the neighbourhood's distinctive character.

Day 3 - teamLab Planets & Ginza Galleries

Afternoon · 16:00

teamLab Planets Evening Slot

Book evening slot: The immersive art - infinity flower mirrors, glowing water rooms - is deeply romantic in the dark. ¥3,200. Book 5+ days ahead.
Duration: 60-90 min. Arrive 15 min early.

Ginza Galleries

Ginza Six gallery: Free contemporary art space inside Japan's most luxurious mall - rotating exhibitions, 6F. The building architecture alone is worth a look.
Itoya stationery: 12-floor stationery emporium - beautiful notebooks, pens, and washi tape. An oddly romantic browse for an hour.

Day 4 - Odaiba Bay Sunset

Afternoon · 15:00

Odaiba Bay Walk & Sunset

Access: Yurikamome Line from Shimbashi (25 min, ¥330) - the driverless elevated train over Rainbow Bridge is itself a romantic journey.
Odaiba beach walk: The artificial beach with views of Rainbow Bridge and the Tokyo skyline at sunset is genuinely beautiful. Walk the waterfront promenade as the light fades.
Tokyo Bay sunset: Facing west, the bay catches the sunset reflecting off Shinjuku and Roppongi tower clusters - best photographed from the Odaiba seafront around 17:00-17:30.

Evening · 19:00

Odaiba Evening

Evening options: Walk the Odaiba waterfront as the bay lights come on, or head back to central Tokyo for the evening. The Rainbow Bridge and skyline are beautiful after dark.

Day 5 - Shimokitazawa Farewell

Afternoon · 13:00

Shimokitazawa Indie Neighbourhood

Why visit: Tokyo's most characterful neighbourhood - vinyl record shops, second-hand fashion, underground live music. Completely different from anything else on the itinerary.
Access: Odakyu Line from Shinjuku (10 min, ¥160).
Stops: Flash Disc Ranch (vinyl), Village Vanguard (eccentric goods), indie live music venues. Allow 2-3 hrs.

Evening · 19:00

Shimokitazawa Evening

Live music: Shimokitazawa has one of Tokyo's best indie music scenes - check what's on at Shelter, Garage, or Basementbar (¥1,500-3,000 door). A perfect final evening.

Shimokitazawa live music. Check what's on at Shelter, Garage, or Basementbar (¥1,500-3,000 door). The neighbourhood has a thriving indie rock and jazz scene most nights - a perfect ending to the trip.

Ginza Six gallery. Free contemporary art space, 6F of Ginza Six mall - rotating international exhibitions. The mall interior (designed by Kengo Kuma) is worth the visit even without an exhibition running.

Odaiba sunset timing. Face west from the Odaiba beachfront. In summer sunset is ~19:00; in winter ~16:30. Check the time for your travel dates and position yourself on the waterfront 30 min before.

teamLab evening slot. Book the 17:00 or 18:00 timed entry for the most atmospheric conditions. The outdoor garden room and the crystal universe are most impressive with darkness outside.
