Day 0 - Arrive in Tokyo
Arrival
Land at Haneda, Check In, Rest
- Use Haneda (HND): Strongly recommended for seniors. The transfer to central Tokyo is 30 min vs. 60-90 min from Narita. After a long international flight, this makes a meaningful difference. Haneda is also a newer, fully accessible airport.
- Hotel tip: Ginza or Shinjuku - both have flat, wide pavements and are close to all Day 1 and 2 destinations. Ginza is particularly comfortable and quiet in the evenings.
- Transit from Haneda: Tokyo Monorail to Hamamatsucho, then JR to Shinjuku or Ginza (¥500-600 total, 25-35 min) - all elevator-accessible. Or a comfortable taxi for ¥3,500-5,000.
- Suica cards: Get IC cards at Haneda airport kiosks. All Tokyo metro and JR trains accept Suica - no need to buy tickets for individual journeys.
- Tonight: Rest is the priority on Day 0.
Day 1 - Hamarikyu Garden & Ginza
Morning · 9:30
Hamarikyu Garden
- Why visit: One of Tokyo's finest historic gardens - flat tidal ponds, a 300-year-old plum grove, and peaceful walking paths. Immaculate, calm, and entirely manageable for seniors. Allow 1.5-2 hrs.
- Entry: ¥300 adults. Fully accessible with paved paths throughout. Benches at regular intervals.
- Access: Oedo subway line to Shiodome station (elevator access), then 7-min flat walk to garden entrance.
Afternoon · 13:30
Ginza Galleries & Itoya Stationery
- Ginza Six gallery (free): Contemporary art exhibitions inside Japan's most architecturally impressive mall - 6F, rotating programme. The building's atrium is worth seeing on its own.
- Itoya: Japan's most famous stationery shop - 12 floors of beautifully crafted notebooks, pens, washi paper, and gift items. A relaxed, thoroughly enjoyable 45 min of browsing.
Day 2 - Meiji Jingu, Omotesando & Takashimaya
Morning · 9:00
Meiji Jingu Shrine
- Why visit: A 700-metre forested avenue of towering torii gates leading to one of Japan's most important Shinto shrines. The walk is completely flat and shaded - genuinely comfortable even in warmer months. Allow 1 hr.
- Skip: The inner garden (Gyoen, ¥500) has narrow gravel paths not suited to all mobility levels. The main shrine approach is sufficient and free.
- Access: JR Harajuku station is directly adjacent - elevator access from the platform.
- Best timing: 9-10:30 AM to avoid school groups and tour parties. Weekdays are significantly calmer than weekends.
🚶 10 min walk - Meiji Jingu → Omotesando boulevard
Late Morning · 10:30
Omotesando Boulevard
- Why visit: A wide, tree-lined boulevard - Tokyo's most architecturally interesting shopping street. Benches are available under the zelkova trees for resting. The 10-min walk from one end to the other is entirely flat.
- Rest: Benches are available under the zelkova trees for resting. The 10-min walk from one end to the other is entirely flat.
- Brief Harajuku: The entrance of Takeshita Street (just two or three stalls) is worth a look for the visual spectacle, but the full street is very crowded and not recommended for comfortable senior walking.
Afternoon · 14:00
Shinjuku Takashimaya Department Store
- Why visit: Everything accessible, floor by floor - excellent Japanese goods mid-floors, and accessible toilets with full facilities on every floor. A quintessential Japanese department store experience.
- Access: Connected directly to Shinjuku station south exit via indoor walkway - no crossing roads.
- Return: Back to hotel by 16:00. Relax and rest before departure.
Before You Go
Accessible train tips. Every major Tokyo station has elevators - look for the "EV" symbol on platform maps. Priority seats (blue/yellow reserved seating) are available in every carriage. Station staff are unfailingly helpful for any assistance needed - approach the ticket gate booth.
Japan's accessible toilets. Among the world's best - every department store, station, and park has fully accessible family restrooms with grab bars, emergency buttons, and ample space. Never a concern in Tokyo.
Avoid peak crowds. Visit shrines and markets between 9:00-11:00 AM (arrive before tour groups). Ginza galleries and department stores are quietest on weekday mornings.
Rest stops. Budget a deliberate rest every 90 min - Japanese department store lounges have comfortable seating with zero pressure. They are genuinely comfortable resting places.
IC card benefits for seniors. Suica can be used for transit and other purchases - no need to handle cash constantly. Keep ¥5,000 loaded and top up at any station kiosk.
