Day 0 - Arrive in Tokyo

Arrival

Land, Check In, Settle

  • Plan: Fly into Haneda (HND) if possible - it's 30 min closer to central Tokyo than Narita, ideal when travelling with children and luggage.
  • Hotel tip: Stay near Ueno or Shinjuku for flat streets, wide pavements, and easy metro access. Ueno Park area hotels are especially good - the park itself is right outside.
  • Transit: From Haneda take the Tokyo Monorail to Hamamatsucho (¥500, 18 min) then JR to your hotel, or a taxi for ¥3,000-4,500 if kids are exhausted.
  • On arrival: Buy Suica IC cards at the airport kiosk for every family member - children under 6 ride free when accompanied by an adult. Pick up any supplies you need at the airport FamilyMart or 7-Eleven before heading to the hotel.

Day 1 - teamLab, Ueno Zoo & Akihabara

Morning · 10:00

teamLab Planets Toyosu

  • Why kids love it: Glowing infinity rooms, a room filled with flowers, and a water-wading room that kids aged 4+ absolutely adore. Plan 60-90 min.
  • Wear: Shorts or clothes you can roll up - the water room is shin-deep. Lockers available for bags (¥100 coin, returned).
  • Tickets: ¥3,200 adults / ¥1,000 ages 4-12 / free under 4. Book timed entry online at least 3 days ahead - weekends sell out fast.
  • Stroller: Strollers must be left at the entrance; carry younger children or use a baby carrier in the water room.

Book Your teamLab Planets Ticket

🚇 30 min - Toyosu → Ueno via Yurakucho Line to Hibiya, then Hibiya Line to Ueno (¥260)
Afternoon · 12:30

Ueno Zoo

  • Why visit: Japan's oldest zoo (1882) is home to giant pandas, gorillas, and polar bears. Kids love the petting area and the monorail inside the zoo. Allow 2-3 hrs.
  • Tickets: ¥600 adults / ¥200 children (elementary) / free under school age.
  • Rest: There are shaded rest areas near the East Garden entrance - a good place for a break mid-visit.
  • Stroller: Fully stroller-accessible with paved paths throughout.
🚇 15 min - Ueno → Akihabara via JR Yamanote Line (¥140)
Late Afternoon · 16:00

Akihabara Character Goods

  • Stops: Pokémon Center Akihabara (7F Yodobashi Akiba, free entry, irresistible plush toys) and Animate (anime goods, 8 floors of wonder for kids into any franchise). Keep it to 45 min - it gets overwhelming.
  • Budget: Set a per-child souvenir budget upfront (¥1,500-2,500 is realistic for one toy/figure).
  • After: Head back to the hotel for rest - a full afternoon of screens and stimulation is enough for young children. Early evenings work best for families on this itinerary.

Day 2 - Meiji Jingu, Harajuku & Hamarikyu

Morning · 9:00

Meiji Jingu Shrine

  • Why visit: A peaceful 700-metre forested walk through towering torii gates to one of Japan's most serene Shinto shrines. The wide forested approach and large decorative barrel displays fascinate young children. Allow 1 hr.
  • Stroller: Wide gravel paths are mostly stroller-friendly; the main approach is flat. A carrier is helpful for the gravel stretches.
  • Entry: Free. The inner garden (Gyoen) is ¥500 - skip with young children as it has narrower paths.
🚶 10 min walk - Through Yoyogi Park to Harajuku Takeshita Street
Late Morning · 10:30

Harajuku Takeshita Street

  • Why kids love it: Character goods shops, colourful facades, and pop-culture spectacle everywhere. The street is 400 m long and endlessly entertaining for 30-45 min.
  • Stroller note: Very crowded on weekends - collapse the stroller and carry children if needed. Weekday mornings are far calmer.
  • Shops: Marion Crêpes, Daiso, and dozens of character goods boutiques line both sides.
🚇 25 min - Harajuku → Shimbashi via JR Yamanote, then walk or taxi to Hamarikyu (¥170)
Afternoon · 13:30

Hamarikyu Garden

  • Why visit: Flat paths, ducks in the tidal ponds, a boat ride on the inner moat, and a 300-year-old traditional pavilion - elegant and totally accessible. Allow 1.5 hrs.
  • Entry: ¥300 adults / free under 12.
  • Boats: Small punt boats available on weekends - kids love them.
  • Return: Head back to the hotel by 16:00 for rest - tired children after a full day need the break.

Before You Go

Stroller on trains. Most Tokyo metro stations have elevators - look for the blue "EV" sign on station maps. Avoid rush hour (8-9:30 AM) entirely with children; trains are dangerously packed.
Convenience stores. Japan's convenience stores (7-Eleven, FamilyMart, Lawson) are extremely child-friendly - clean toilets, air conditioning, and a wide range of supplies. There's one within 3 min of almost every stop on this itinerary.
Toilets. Japan has some of the world's cleanest public toilets - most department stores, train stations, and parks have accessible family restrooms. Never worry about this in Tokyo.
Suica setup. Get Suica IC cards at Haneda or Narita airport. Children under 6 travel free. Top up at any station kiosk. You can also use Suica at convenience stores and vending machines.
Midday rest. Build a 30-45 min rest back at the hotel between 14:00 and 15:00. Young children tire fast in the heat (or excitement) and recover quickly - this prevents meltdowns.
