Day 0 - Arrive in Tokyo

Arrival

Land, Check In, Settle

Plan: Fly into Haneda (HND) - significantly closer to the city than Narita. With tired children and luggage, the shorter transfer makes a real difference.
Hotel tip: Base yourself near Ikebukuro or Ueno - both are flat, have wide streets, excellent supermarkets, and are central for all three days.
Transit: Tokyo Monorail from Haneda to Hamamatsucho (¥500, 18 min), then JR or taxi to hotel.
On arrival: Pick up Suica cards and grab dinner from the hotel convenience store. Skip the restaurant on night zero - everyone is jet-lagged.

Day 1 - teamLab Planets & Ueno Zoo

Why kids love it: Immersive glowing rooms, a water-wading room (shin-deep), and a flower infinity mirror kids remember forever. Ages 4+ are most engaged. Allow 60-90 min.
Tickets: ¥3,200 adults / ¥1,000 ages 4-12 / free under 4. Book timed entry online - weekends sell out.
Wear: Shorts or roll-up clothes for the water room. Baby carriers recommended over strollers inside.

🚇 30 min - Toyosu → Ueno via Yurakucho Line + Hibiya Line (¥260)

Afternoon · 12:30

Ueno Zoo

Why visit: Giant pandas, gorillas, polar bears, and a children's petting area. Allow 2-3 hrs.
Tickets: ¥600 adults / ¥200 elementary children / free under school age.
Stroller: Fully accessible - paved paths throughout. The zoo's internal monorail (free) is a bonus for kids.

🚇 5 min - Walk through Ueno Park or JR to Akihabara (¥140)

Akihabara Character Goods (Brief)

Stops: Pokémon Center (7F Yodobashi Akiba) and Animate for character goods. Keep it to 45 min.
After Akihabara: Head back to your hotel for a rest before the evening - a break here helps younger children recharge.

Day 2 - Meiji Jingu, Harajuku & Hamarikyu

Why visit: Peaceful forested walk through enormous torii gates. Calm, beautiful, and manageable for young children. Allow 1 hr. Free entry.
Stroller: Wide gravel approach path - mostly stroller-friendly, but a carrier helps on gravel.

🚶 10 min walk - Through Yoyogi Park to Takeshita Street entrance

Late Morning · 10:30

Harajuku Takeshita Street

Why kids love it: Rainbow crêpes, fluffy cotton candy, character shops. 400 m of colour and novelty. Keep to 30-45 min on weekends - very crowded.
Pick up: Marion Crêpes (classic), Totti Candy Factory (rainbow cotton candy for photos).

🚇 25 min - Harajuku → Shimbashi, then short walk to Hamarikyu (¥170)

Hamarikyu Garden

Why visit: Flat tidal garden with ducks, moat boats, and a traditional teahouse. Calming after a busy morning. Allow 1.5 hrs.
Entry: ¥300 adults / free under 12. Tea at Nakajima teahouse ¥1,050 incl. wagashi sweet.
Return: Back to hotel by 16:00 for rest before dinner.

Day 3 - Sunshine Aquarium & Ikebukuro

Sunshine Aquarium, Ikebukuro

Why visit: Rooftop aquarium with a sky-high penguin "sky path" walkway - children are captivated. Fully indoor sections are ideal for rainy days. Allow 1.5-2 hrs.
Tickets: ¥2,400 adults / ¥1,200 ages 4-12 / ¥700 ages 3 and under. Book online to skip queues.
Crowd tip: Ikebukuro is noticeably less crowded than Shibuya or Harajuku - great for family pacing.
Access: Sunshine City is fully accessible - wide corridors, elevators, family restrooms on every floor.

🚶 5 min walk - Sunshine Aquarium to Namco Amusement Park (same Sunshine City complex)

Afternoon · 13:00

Namco Amusement Park or Sunshine City Mall

Namco: Classic arcade games, crane machines loaded with character plushies, and ride simulators for older kids (¥100-500 per game).
Sunshine City: Multi-floor mall with a Loft stationery shop, toy floors, food court with everything from ramen to pasta. Good for last-day souvenir shopping.
Early rest: Return to hotel by 15:30 - a gentle final afternoon before departure preparations.

Before You Go

Stroller-friendly exits. At every station look for the "EV" (elevator) symbol on platform maps. Google Maps navigation shows accessible routes - turn on the wheelchair accessibility filter.

Rainy day backup. Sunshine Aquarium and teamLab Planets are both fully indoor - keep one as your flex option if weather turns. Ikebukuro's Sunshine City mall also has an entire indoor world.

Convenience store meals. Japanese convenience stores (7-Eleven, FamilyMart, Lawson) have genuinely good food: warm onigiri ¥120, karaage bento ¥450, hot dogs, oden. Clean, fast, and kids are happy.

Suica for children. Children under 6 travel free on Tokyo Metro and JR when accompanied by an adult. Ages 6-11 pay half fare with a child Suica issued at station offices.

Ikebukuro base. Ikebukuro is often overlooked but excellent for families - flat streets, less crowded than Shinjuku, Sunshine City right there, and great value hotels.
