Day 0 - Arrive in Tokyo

Arrival

Land at Haneda, Check In, Rest

  • Use Haneda (HND): Essential for seniors - 30 min to central Tokyo vs. 90 min from Narita. Newer, fully accessible, less chaotic than Narita. Book Haneda flights specifically when possible.

  • Tonight: Rest. Seven days is a long trip - begin rested.

Day 5 - Senso-ji & Tokyo Skytree

Morning · 7:00

Senso-ji Temple & Asakusa Crafts

Day 6 - Nikko Day Trip (UNESCO Shrine)

Full Day · 8:00 depart

Nikko - Toshogu Shrine

  • Why visit: Toshogu is one of Japan's most breathtakingly ornate shrines - gold leaf, intricate woodcarvings, and the famous three wise monkeys relief. A UNESCO World Heritage Site and genuinely unlike anything in Tokyo. Start early for the best light and fewest crowds.
  • Access: Tobu Nikko Limited Express from Asakusa station to Tobu Nikko station (2 hrs, ¥1,360 reserved seating - reserved seats strongly recommended, fully accessible carriages). Direct route with no transfers. Depart 8:00 AM, arrive 10:00 AM.
  • Accessibility at Nikko: The main shrine path from the bus stop to Toshogu has some gentle inclines and stone stairs at the gate - manageable for most seniors with care. The main areas of Toshogu (Yomeimon gate, Nemuri Neko carving, main hall) are largely accessible. Avoid the Okumiya path (steep mountain stairs) - the lower shrine complex is sufficient and magnificent.
  • Duration: Allow 2-2.5 hrs at Toshogu.
  • Return: Depart Nikko by 14:00, back in Tokyo by 16:00. Rest before a quiet evening.
  • Important: Avoid the Nikko waterfall trail (Kegon Falls path) - it involves steep descent and uneven terrain. The shrine complex alone is completely rewarding.

Day 7 - Ginza Morning & Departure Prep

Morning · 9:30

Final Ginza Morning

  • Itoya stationery: Final gifts - Japanese washi notebooks, ink pens, and seasonal cards for family. Beautiful packaging, excellent quality, affordable.
  • Airport transit: Haneda from Ginza: taxi (¥2,500-3,500, 25-35 min) or Keikyu Line from Higashi-Ginza station (30 min, ¥480, elevator access).

Before You Go

Nikko accessibility. The main Toshogu shrine path has gentle stone stairs at the Omote-mon gate - 5-8 steps. Handrails available. The rest of the main shrine complex is largely manageable. Avoid the Okumiya (inner shrine) mountain path entirely.
Packing medicine. Bring all prescription medications with your GP's signed letter translated if possible. Pack double the daily amount you need as a buffer. Matsumoto Kiyoshi pharmacies are everywhere, but staff rarely speak English and Japanese drug names differ.
Airport assistance. Book wheelchair or mobility assistance with your airline when booking the flight - not at the gate. Both Haneda and Narita handle this well when pre-arranged. Haneda's compact layout makes it far easier for seniors with any mobility limitations.
Slow travel benefits. Seven days in Tokyo rewards those who slow down - revisiting a favourite kissaten, finding a back street missed on Day 1, or simply sitting in a park watching the city. Give yourself permission to not see everything. What you see, see well.
Daily distance planning. Keep each day's total walking under 5-6 km. Use Google Maps' accessible route filter. Build in a return to the hotel at 15:00 each afternoon - even a 45-min rest transforms the energy for a lovely evening.
