Day 6 - Arashiyama Cycling + Koryu-ji Temple

Arashiyama Cycling Day

What: Arashiyama has flat riverside cycling paths along the Oi River - one of the most family-friendly cycling routes in Kyoto. E-bikes available for adults (¥1,500-2,000/day), regular bikes for older children (¥1,000-1,500/day), and child seats or tag-along bikes for younger ones.
Route: Cycle from Togetsukyo bridge north along the river, loop back through Arashiyama village. 4-5 hours at a leisurely pace with stops for photo opportunities and views.
Hire shops: Several rental shops near Saga-Arashiyama Station and Togetsukyo bridge. Open from 9am.
Tip: The flat riverside paths are stroller-width and gentle - children as young as 4 can manage short stretches on balance bikes. Helmets provided.

Koryu-ji Temple (Uzumasa)

What: One of Kyoto's oldest temples (603 AD), home to Japan's most famous wooden statue - the Miroku Bosatsu (Bodhisattva of the Future), carved in the 7th century from red pine. The statue's peaceful half-smile is considered one of the world's most beautiful sculptural expressions. Interesting for older children curious about ancient art.
Treasure House: The museum building contains 50+ National Treasure statues - extraordinary collection for a rarely-visited temple. ¥800 adults / ¥400 children.
Time: 1 hr.

T-shirt making: Several craft workshops near Kyoto Station offer Japanese pattern t-shirt printing (fabric dyeing, block printing) - good for children aged 5+. ¥1,500-2,500 per person. Allow 1 hr. Book ahead on weekends.
Souvenirs: Kyoto Station Isetan basement has packaged Kyoto specialty goods to take home. Better value than airport shops.

Kyoto Station Departure Area

Explore: Kyoto Station is an architectural landmark - the 15-storey space frame roof is dramatic. The Sky Garden (10F open-air walkway) gives panoramic views over the city for free.
Depart: Kyoto Station is the shinkansen hub - perfect last stop before heading to the airport or onward.

Before You Go

Arashiyama cycling logistics. Book bikes ahead on weekends - popular hire shops sell out. Tag-along bikes (a child attachment to an adult bicycle) and child seats are available but limited. Call ahead or book online.

Kyoto Station Sky Garden. The free open-air walkway on the 10th floor gives panoramic views over the city. Access via the escalator bank on the east side. Open until 11pm, no charge.
