Three days gives families with children a comfortable pace - two active outdoor days followed by a third day built around two world-class indoor attractions that double as the perfect rainy-day backup plan.

Day 3 - Kyoto Railway Museum · Kyoto Aquarium

Kyoto Railway Museum (Kyoto Tetsudo Hakubutsukan)

What: Japan's largest railway museum - 53 real trains displayed across three floors, including steam locomotives, Shinkansen cars, and the original Tōkaidō Shinkansen 0 Series. Children can sit in driver's cabs and explore real carriages. The steam locomotive ride (SL Steam Locomotive, ¥300 extra) runs on weekends and holidays.
Interactive exhibits: Train driving simulators (additional ¥200 each, limited slots - queue early), miniature railway, and a huge diorama with working model trains that children can operate.
Cost: ¥1,200 adults / ¥500 children (aged 4-12) / free under 4.
Time: 2-3 hrs. This is a full morning for train-loving children.
Access: 15 min walk west from Kyoto Station, or Bus 103/104/110 to Umekoji Koen-mae (¥230).

Kyoto Aquarium

What: An inland aquarium in Umekoji Park - Japan's largest freshwater fish exhibit, giant salamanders (Kyoto's famous giant Japanese salamander), penguins, sea otters, jellyfish, and a dolphin show. Fully indoor - ideal for hot summer days or rain.
Highlights for children: The petting tank (touch starfish and sea cucumbers), the penguin parade, and the giant Japanese salamander exhibit - the world's largest amphibian, native to Kyoto's rivers.
Cost: ¥2,050 adults / ¥900 children (aged 3-12) / free under 3.
Time: 1.5-2 hrs.

Plan: Umekoji Park is a short walk from Kyoto Station - ideal last stop before departure or a rest day wind-down near the hotel.

Before You Go

Railway Museum simulator slots. The driving simulators are very popular - join the queue at opening (10am) to secure a slot. Available for children aged 6+ with an adult. Slots sell out by 11am on weekends.

Perfect rainy-day plan. Day 3 is entirely indoors - both the Railway Museum and Aquarium are fully covered. Reassign Day 3 to whichever day has bad weather during your trip for maximum comfort.

Book Aquarium ahead. The Kyoto Aquarium sells online advance tickets at a slight discount and avoids queuing at the entrance. Worthwhile on weekends and school holidays when queues can be 30+ min.
