Japan Visa Guide for Indians: Requirements & Process (2026)

For Indian passport holders, obtaining a Japanese visa is generally a straightforward process if you have all your documents in order. Since early 2023, the introduction of the E-Visa for Indian citizens has made things even easier.

1. The Japan E-Visa (Recommended)

If you are traveling as a tourist for less than 90 days, you can apply for an E-Visa online.

  • Eligibility: Indian citizens residing in India.
  • Type: Single-entry Short-term Stay (Tourist).
  • Processing Time: Usually 5 working days.
  • Application: Via the official JAPAN e-VISA website.

2. Required Documents

Whether applying online or via VFS, you'll generally need:

  • Passport: Must be valid for 6 months beyond travel.
  • Photos: 2x2 inch, white background, recent.
  • Flight Itinerary: Confirmed or reserved round-trip tickets.
  • Hotel Bookings: Confirmation for your entire stay.
  • Bank Statements: Past 6 months to show financial stability.
  • ITR: Last 3 years of Income Tax Returns.

3. Processing via VFS Global

If you prefer a physical sticker or are applying for a multiple-entry visa, you must go through VFS Global. Japan does not accept direct applications at the Embassy/Consulate.

VFS centers are available in major cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, and Kolkata.
